Coaching - What it is and what it is not
The International Coaching Federation (ICF) defines coaching as “partnering with clients in a thought-provoking and creative process that inspires them to maximize their personal and professional potential.”
Key words in this definition are partnering, thought-provoking, and maximize potential. These are the elements that differentiate professional coaching from other forms of support for organizations or individuals. The value of a coach lies in his or her ability to serve as an insight-provoking partner, supporting the client to design his or her own actionable and sustainable strategies for success. Coaching means to become a collaborative & co-creating partner with the client leading the way.
A consultant or mentor tells the client how to proceed and what they should be doing or not doing, gives advice and gives examples of how their experience applies.
A therapist or counselor deals with issues in the client’s past that are causing problems in their current lives, they uncover the “WHY.” Exploring issues such as family of origin and deep emotional trauma can uncover why they behave the way they do. Therapy or counseling requires a license. Practicing without a license is dangerous and illegal.
